About the Auxiliary

The Auxiliary is a chartered organization that was created to support the Kimberton Fire Company.

At the beginning of the organization's existence the members were all women. They held various events to raise money to support the Fire Company's needs. Some of the members actually took the fire calls at their homes, and then sounded the alarm. When the Fire Company was called to a big fire - such as a burning barn - and had manpower on the fire scene for long hours, the Auxiliary women were the ones who arrived with the hot coffee and homemade sandwiches to sustain the men as they fought the blaze.

Today the Auxiliary includes both men and women. Fire dispatch by phone and siren have been replaced by state-of-the-art radio and pager systems. And the need for delivering hot coffee and food in the pre-dawn hours is now filled by sandwich and pizza delivery shops. But the need for the Auxiliary to raise funds to support the Fire Company still exists today.

Fundraising

The Auxiliary members work several fundraising events to supply an estimated $35,000 a year for the Fire Company. These events include catering banquets and weddings in the Fire Company's rental hall, making and selling homemade donuts both at the Kimberton Community Fair and also on monthly "Donut Days", and running refreshment booths for the Fair and other special activities.

Auxiliary members earn "credits" every time they volunteer for a catering event, a donut day, or a special activity. Every two years the volunteers can use their "credits" to earn the right to attend a special group outing. The Auxiliary has conducted trips to New York City to see a Broadway play and also to various musical theaters.

Help Needed!

The Auxiliary is always in need of members who can assist with the many functions. Some of appreciated skills include waitressing, bussing tables, dishwashing, food preparation, table setting, food sales to the public, ticket selling, recordkeeping, advertising, and taking phone orders for donuts.

The Auxiliary has 2-3 events per month, and the average volunteer gives 4-6 hours per event. Volunteers are needed for day time and evening events. The largest event is the 6 night Kimberton Community Fair. Volunteers work in shifts throughout the day in order to be able to meet the large demand for the homemade donuts.

How To Volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering, contact the Auxiliary at their monthly meeting - the second Monday of every month (except August and December) at the Kimberton Fire Company's meeting room.

In Tribute to Helen (Wallace) Ash

April 14, 1928 - February 4, 2004

To our dear friend Helen
Thank you for all that you did...and all that you were.
For the all the little extra, thoughtful things
that went without mention. . .
Making sure the coffee was always on;
Organizing all those Donut Days -
ordering the supplies,
getting up at pre-dawn to start the machines,
and staying until the last customer
picked up his order;
Figuring out how much food to order for banquets
Mixing your "special" cole slaw dressing
Washing and ironing the linens week after week
Calling the volunteers;
Scraping dishes, washing pans
Staying late to help clean up after
everyone else had gone home;
Being the friendly face behind the window during the Fair;
Making sure we always had
enough to eat;
Bringing us pies, cakes and sticky buns
for no particular reason;
Chatting over a cup of coffee when the
work was through;
Being with us during our happy times,
and comforting us during the sad times;
Always sharing your smile,
your laugh, and your friendship.
Thank you for all that you did...and all that you were.
