FAIR HISTORY

Kimberton Community Fair is a volunteer group that has accomplished a major milestone in it’s organization. For 76 years, it has been a fundraising event for the local Kimberton Fire Company.

What started out as just a small carnival put on by the volunteers in 1929 evolved into a State-sanctioned event that attracts thousands of visitors in one week. And it continues to be fully staffed by volunteers after all these years!

In the last five years, Fair has raised over $600,000 dollars for the fire company as well as added $200,000 in capital improvements to the fairgrounds.

The Fair has seen many changes over the years: a 10-day fair to a 6-day fair; entertaining trapeze artists to racing pigs; automobile raffles to cash prizes; handwritten bookkeeping to computerized reports; and tents to permanent buildings. But the heart of the Fair has stayed the same: a wholesome place run by volunteers where folks can come to see each other, enjoy homemade food, and have fun with their friends and family.

The first Fair was held on the Supiot property that is now developed into the Powder Mill residential community located along Route 113 near Rapps Dam Road. Ironically the original firehouse had been destroyed by fire, and the community and fire company members rallied together to raise funds to construct a new one.

It took time and patience, especially since the fair profits were meager in those beginning years. For example, in 1931, the Fair only made a profit of $800! But by 1934 the Fire Company was finally able to raise the $1,500 needed to purchase a 16-acre tract of land for their new (and present day) firehouse located between Kimberton Road and Route 113. The tradition has been held there ever since.

Sparky the Fire Dog & Smokey the Bear Visit the Kimberton Fair!

Volunteer firefighters suited up to make guest appearances from Smokey the Bear & Sparky the Firedog at the Fair. Firefighters noted "And you think it was hot walking around the Fairgrounds in your shorts & shirt"
