CO ALARMS NOW REQUIRED IN MULTI FAMILY HOMES

July 13, 2015

Effective June 18, 2015, Landlords in Pennsylvania are now required to install Carbon Monoxide detectors in multi family rental Units. Any muilti-family building that uses fossil fuel heaters/appliance or fireplace or has an attached garage must have a carbon monoxide detector.

Governor signed into law in December 2014 Senate Bill 607 establishing the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Standards Act which took effect in June of 2015. Attached is a link to allow reading of the bill.

Firefighters recommend purchasing units that have digital displays. Upon an activation do not open windows and doors. Simply evacuate your home and call 911. Leaving windows open will only allow the CO to escape, making it difficult for the firefighters to meter your home and determine if a problem actually existed, or the alarm was malfunctioning.
