KIMBERTON FIRE DEPARTMENT AWARDED
FIRE PREVENTION GRANT FOR $12,100
Kimberton
Firefighters were awarded a $ 12,100 fire Prevention and Safety grant through the Department
of Homeland Security and the Office for Domestic Preparedness. The approval is actually part
of the 2003 Fire Safety awards, as was submitted by Chief Charles Fields back in the Fall of
2003.
The grant award covers the purchase of a Robotic Sparky the Fire Dog. The unit is built by
Robotronics Inc in Springville, Utah and is valued at just under $ 9000. Sparky will join Volunteers
at the Kimberton FD in their journey to educate the public on fire safety. Visitors to the Kimberton
Fair may remember seeing Sparky roaming the grounds & chatting with children. That unit had
been borrowed from a neighboring station in Montgomery County. Chief Fields expects that Sparky
will be visiting schools, working birthday parties, the Kimberton Fair and other special events
in the community.
The grant also included the purchase of Fire Safety Cubes. These Cubes open up and contain
fire safety messages to children. They are expected to be used in local schools as well as birthday
parties and special events. The grant will cover the purchase of 1000 of these Fire Safety cubes
costing approximately $ 3000.
Fire Chief Charles Fields indicated they are currently in the process of developing a grant
proposal for the 2004 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant program. The grant is expected to be
completed by the end of September and that it will be sometime in early to mid 2005 before they
find out how successful they are. The grant was written without the assistance of a grant writer.
