Sunday February 22, 2015. At 7:16 PM Chester County Communications alerted Kimberton Fire (61), East Whiteland Fire (05), Phoenixville FD (65), and a MICU from West End Ambulance for a house fire on Highland Hill Lane in Charlestown Twp. The large home was located off a cul-de-sac in a rural section of the Township with no water supply. First In units found heavy smoke coming from the home and began an interior attack. A 2nd alarm was stuck for additional units and water. This brought units from: Valley Forge (68), Lionville (47), Paoli (3) and Ridge (62) Fire departments. Firefighters quickly found themselves overwhelmed by fire in the ceilings and walls from the basement all the way to the 2nd floor. The fire quickly found its way into the attic and burnt thru the roof. Five (5) firefighters were injured bringing in additional EMS units from Trappe (Phoenixville division), Malvern and Paoli. Three (3) firefighters were taken to area hospitals and another transported later. One firefighter was injured but not transported to the hospital as was the homeowner. The incident was brought under control at 9:07 PM, but crews remained on the scene until after 11 PM. County Fire investigators were on scene and ruled the fire accidental. Follow-up showed the fire had a substantial head start before the homeowners ever knew about the fire. Early estimates at damages are over a million dollars.
